7th Grade Geology Test

Term 3

1/9/18

In class today, we reviewed expectations.  Disclosures are due Jan 22.  SCIENCE FAIR is due Jan 16th.  We also drew and labeled a microscope and took a quiz about cells.

Cells Quiz

1.11.18

Cell Functions.  This presentation contains pictures of various cells.  Students have to identify which organelles are present and based on what they observe make a prediction about the function of the cells.

Cell Functions

CELLULAR FORENSICS LAB

In class we saw how forensic scientists can use cells to help solve crimes.  If students were absent for this lab, they should research how scientists can use cells to solve crimes and write a page about what they learned.

1.18.18

Cell Model.  Students will make a model of either a plant or animal cell.  The model can be made of any material.  It may be 2D or 3D.  It must include at least 10 labeled organelles.  It is due 1.22.18

Organ Systems Project. Due 1.30.18

Flowers

2/13/12

Pollination and seed dispersal are two key attributes that define why plants are the shape, size, and color they are.

Mendelian Crosses

Notes about Mendelian Inheritance.

2.20.18

All possible Mendelian Crosses.  In class we learned that there are 3 possible Genotypes/organism.  AA called "Homozygous Dominant."  Aa called "heterozygous."  And finally aa called "homozygous recessive."  These 3 genotypes can pair in 6 unique ways:

AA x AA,  AA x Aa, AA x aa, Aa x Aa, Aa x aa, and aa x aa

Make a chart showing the genotypes and phenotypes that result from these six combinations.

3.5.18

The title above links to a list of the standards students are responsible for by the end of the year.  Students are to look through the 7th grade standards and make an Excel sheet documenting how well they know each criteria on a scale from 0-5, and how they plan to study the topics they are not familiar.  During 4th term, students will need to submit one or more projects that prove they have mastered each of these standards.  Due ASAP.

Virtual Fly Lab

Instructions

3.13.18

Students are to click on the link.  This will take them to the virtual fly lab.  They will be working backwards using phenotypes and possible crosses to test their hypotheses about the genotypes of various traits of fruit flies.  Students should follow the instructions and answer the questions of the document attached.

Is Nicotine Addiction Genetic?

3.15.18

Complete the lab.  Submit a report detailing the following:

1. What did you investigate?

2. How did you investigate this?

3. What did you conclude?

4. What evidence lead you to this conclusion?

Genetics Test Review

3.28.18

Genetics Test Review.  The genetics test is scheduled for Friday, March 30th.  I will not be in class March 28th.  Please work on this packet to prepare for your upcoming exam.  Email me if you have any questions.  Good luck!--Mr. Boom

Notes about genetics.  Taken from Alberts et al. 2008. Molecular Biology of The Cell. Garland Science NY: 554-555.

There are 2 portions to this test, a written version and a computer version.  Please complete both.

Population Labs

Part 1: M&M Lab

4.13.18

Get a bag of M&Ms or other colored candy.  Take a small sample.  Make a bar graph of the numbers of different colors of candy.  Pick one color.  For this experiment, you can only eat that one color.  Take another sample, eat the  chosen color.  What happens to the population?  How does this relate to evolution?

Part 2: Population Estimating

Methods for estimating populations

4.16.18

Fossils.  In class we learned about fossils.  If you were absent, research and write 1 page about what is a fossil and how do they form?

Earth Day

Earth Day

4.20.18

Earth Day is April 22nd.  To celebrate we will take a look at some of the problems facing Earth.  The PowerPoint is a quiz.  Match each problem to what is causing it.  If you need help, clicking on the pictures will link to an article related to that topic.  Once you have completed the quiz.  Summarize any three of the articles.

What did T-Rex Taste Like?

4.24.18

Complete the lab above.  USING COMPLETE SENTENCES, write down what you investigated and how you came to this conclusion.  Investigate other traits related to T-Rex and write down how you investigated these other traits?
